Fans of the horror genre were very excited when Junji Ito’s Uzumaki was announced to be under production by Studios Drive and Akatsuki. With a promising first look, the series was slated to release on Adult Swim in 2020 but was shifted to 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
However, even after this, the series was shifted to a 2022 release date which got further delayed and is currently still not confirmed in May 2024. The story is notorious for being Junji Ito’s best and most complex work, with highly detailed designs and a horrifying story. Executives from the studio have conveyed to fans that the reason for the delays is to recreate the beloved series and its intricate details properly.
While both the animating studios as well as Adult Swim itself do not have the best track record when it comes to producing anime, the 4 year project is expected to be one of the best horror anime ever made…..should it ever see the light of day.
Uzumaki Story
Set in the small town of Kurouzu-cho, Kirie is a girl who lives a regular life with her family and spends time with her boyfriend, Shuuichi. One day, she sees Shuuichi’s father being entranced by a shell. When questioned, Shuuichi responded with the shocking discovery that the town was cursed by spirals and that he wished to leave as soon as possible.
With each passing day, this becomes more apparent as the spirals present in a variety of objects spread through the town like an infection and cause frightful events. Will Kirie, Shuuichi and all others be able to survive this paranormal situation?
Who is the Creator of Uzumaki?
Uzumaki was created by the horror extraordinaire, Junji Ito. Known for his other creations such as Tomie, Gyo and several scary short stories, he has formed a large fanbase who deeply enjoy his frightful creations.
In addition to his stunning artwork and panels, Uzumaki goes a step above the rest with a comprehensive tale that is written much better than any of Ito’s other works. Despite being only 19 chapters long, it completely hooks us into its world and still fascinates readers to this day.
