Long ago, in the Lands Between, the gods and demigods fought fierce battles to rule the land. But as the demigods perished and the land was tainted with a deadly Rot, your people, the tarnished, were forced into exile. Now, after years of wandering, you have been called back to the Lands Between to clean up the chaos and restore order.
As a warrior, you must collect the shattered pieces of the Elden Ring, known as the Great Runes, and return them to the Elden Throne. But in order to complete this divine mission, you will have to defeat powerful foes, including humans, beasts, dragons, demigods, and gods, each with their own motivations and incredible abilities.
The overall lore of the game is complex and dense, but the individual backstories of the characters are rich and intriguing. For example, there is the story of Radahn, a giant demigod who once was considered the strongest. In his youth, he fell in love with his petite and frail horse, and went to Magic School to learn Gravity Magic so he could make himself a manageable weight to ride his beloved steed. In the process, he discovered that the Lands Between were being threatened by powerful beings from beyond the stars, and he knew that the only way to protect his homeland was to use his newfound magic to lock the stars in place.
Another character, Ranni the Witch, is a young Demigoddess who was chosen as a candidate to become the new goddess of the lands. However, she refused to become fate’s plaything, and in a rebellion against fate and the Goddess Marika, she devised a way to kill a god. This led to her death, leaving her a soulless husk. As we meet her later in the game, she is older and wiser, and making moves to step up to the throne and become the Goddess of The Lands Between.
There’s also the story of Malenia and Miquella, twin brothers who were born cursed. Malenia’s body is one with the Rot, in constant pain, her body deteriorating, but she was gifted with incredible power. Miquella was cursed with eternal youth, but he has incredible intellect, and a magnetic personality. Both are candidates to become the next God/dess of the land, and they both vow to overcome their curses.
And finally, there’s the story of Iron Fist Alexander, a large and fierce warrior who comes from the small village of Jarburg. He tempers his ceramic body with lava and ice by consuming the bodies of other fallen warriors, but he struggles with whether he can ever truly escape his humble beginnings and become a true warrior, despite his fragile vessel.
These are just a few examples of the many incredible stories packed into this game, and there are many more to discover. Telling the little stories is a more engaging way to recommend the game to friends, rather than just describing the overall lore.
